Women of Vision LOVE Carson-Newman!

Women of Vision Choose 2017 Projects

In January, Women of Vision Leadership Council spent much of their annual retreat studying the many project proposals from groups at Carson-Newman. All have merit, but because of funding, WOV must limit their list of projects to take on. A proposed list of  projects was taken to Carson-Newman's Executive Council for final approval.  Here are the new projects.  Which one would you like to help with?
  •  Butler Welcome Center kitchen renovations and decor for their bathrooms
  •  Operation Inasmuch and SPOTS funding
  •  Renovation of two student lounges on the 1st and 3rd floors of the Science Building
  • Global Education House porch replacement and office renovations
  •  Henderson Hall- furniture for classrooms 218 and 221.
  •  Henderson Hall - Smart classroom 318 and water fountain replacement
  •  Heritage dorm renovations (desk area, kitchen, courtyard)
  •  Mossy Creek Bridge funding
  •  Warren Art Building flooring
  •  Fite Building refurbishing of lobby, hall, and stairwells
Details about each project will be featured in future blog posts. Here are a few "before" pictures:

Heritage Hall

How many of you remember your days at Carson-Newman when this was known as "New Men's Dorm?"  Now called Heritage Hall, this dorm houses most freshman men and is no longer new! The proposal for this project was submitted by an RA (resident assistant) who lives in the dorm. This student has already learned leadership skills at Carson-Newman and did an excellent job of conveying the physical needs of this dorm through his proposal.  Plans include renovating the front desk area of the lobby, kitchen, and an outdoor courtyard and basketball court.

Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics Department Student Areas

These two student areas on the first and third floors of the  Dougherty Science Center are in desperate need of some TLC.  Women of Vision plan to update and refurbish these areas. I think you'll agree these spaces can use some improvement.

Center for Global Education

The Center for Global Education is in need of renovation in several areas.  This is where international visitors and students are received, and is an important part of the campus. Women of Vision will fund the much needed replacement of this front porch. It is hoped that when funding can be secured, WOV can continue this project with interior office renovations.

Proposed Plan for Stokely Ladies' Restroom

Stay tuned for more details on other projects in future blog posts. One large project that is being funded by Women of Vision are the Stokely Restrooms. This project will be started as soon as the spring semester is completed in early May.

Other Women of Vision News

Kay O'Brien is back!

The Leadership Council was thrilled to welcome back Women of Vision President Kay O'Brien at the January meeting. CN's President Randall and First Lady Kay took a much needed fall semester sabbatical. We missed them both and were happy to see Kay, who surprised all the WOV Leadership Council members with special surprise gifts she had for them.

Awards were given to each person including the "This Little Light of Mine" award to Diana Nixon for reminding  all to let their lights shine thru their work, the "Hold It All Together" award to Leah Smith who takes care of everything as the CN-WOV Liaison, the "Big Picture" award to Kathy May for her leadership in keeping the council focused on its purpose, and the "Bippity Boppity Boo" award to Beverly Adams for her amazing ability to transform any space using lots of incredible creativity and usually for a budget price.

Leadership Council Spotlight: Beverly Adams

Beverly Adams (2nd from left) at Campus Ministry House

Beverly Adams is Women of Vision's Projects Coordinator. She is often on campus talking to staff about their proposed projects, taking before and after pictures, and finding the perfect materials to make each WOV project really shine. Beverly is a 1985 CN graduate who played volleyball and majored in English.  Now the single mom to three sons, Beverly lives in Knoxville and is constantly on the hunt for bargain furniture, decor, and building materials that can be used in a WOV project. Her ability to envision the potential for any space makes her a perfect fit for Projects Coordinator.
